Active Travel Map Launched!

5/12/2024

We are excited to announce the launch of our brand-new Active Travel Map, a fantastic resource designed to help families make healthier, more sustainable choices when travelling to and from school. This map is the result of a brilliant project led by a dedicated group of our Year 5 and Year 6 pupils, who worked hard over several weeks to develop this valuable resource.

What is the Active Travel Map?
The Active Travel Map highlights safe and realistic walking and cycling routes in our local area, making it easier for families to choose active and eco-friendly ways to travel. The map aims to reduce car journeys, improve air quality, and promote healthier lifestyles for our school community.

How Was the Map Created?
Our pupils took part in a series of engaging workshops, learning about air pollution, its effects on health, and the benefits of active travel. They investigated particulate levels around the school and measured their heart rates during physical activity to understand the positive impact exercise can have on our bodies.
With their new knowledge, the pupils used mapping tools to identify key routes and create positive messaging to encourage active travel. Their hard work resulted in a clear, informative map designed to help our community make greener choices.

Sharing the Message
To promote the map, the pupils delivered an assembly to their peers, sharing what they had learned about air quality and encouraging everyone to consider how they travel. A large vinyl banner now proudly hangs outside the school, promoting our active travel zones and reminding everyone to think about healthier and more sustainable travel options.

Why Is This Important?
By reducing car journeys and increasing walking or cycling, we can:
  • Improve air quality in our community
  • Encourage healthier habits for our pupils and their families
  • Help reduce traffic congestion around our school

Thank You!
We are incredibly proud of the pupils who took part in this project — their hard work has resulted in a fantastic resource that will benefit our entire community. We encourage all our families to take a look at the map, displayed on our school banner, and consider ways to include active travel in their daily routine.

Together, we can make a big difference for our environment, our health, and our school community.

Let’s get moving! 🚶‍♀️🚴‍♂️💚
